Of all the issues being brought up by presidential hopefuls, the one that affects my life the most as a gay person is federal marriage laws. I do not support Barack Obama’s position on marriage. His stance that marriage is between a man and a woman makes me question his definition of change. Christianity has been used as a justification for denying gay individuals equal marriage rights for a long time now. I’m supposed to be excited about the promise of civil unions, yet, since civil unions do not offer the same rights and protections of marriage as straight folks get, I’m not impressed. Further, the title “civil unions” serves to separate it from marriage and thus reinforces the notion that gay couples are inferior to their straight counterparts. I do not want to get civilly unionized, if it means settling for fewer rights. I already have less rights and I am holding out for better than second-class citizenship.
