The Columbia University Food Sustainability Project and EarthCo have gone out of their way, beaten the administration, and secured prime real estate outside Pupin. For what? For making a flower and vegetable garden (How to). What I find annoying is that fruit is left out of the picture. They come hand-in-hand, fruit and veggies do.
Jumping over that fruity hurdle, once the juicy tomatoes and other vegetables actually grow, who’s gonna control animals, insects, kleptomaniacs and hungry people? ‘Mad-Eye’ Moody would call for constant vigilance. The Bush Administration would wire-tap your ass.
Personally, I am in favor of creating a huge, multi-level greenhouse to replicate fertile land. Using the profits of selling mass vegetable (and hopefully fruit) produce, we can begin tackling a very serious problem that lies ahead for Columbia University.
The garden itself is aimed at encouraging awareness of environmental sustainability issues or some other idealistic idea. If anything, the garden will end up acting as that “little, cute spot in front of Pupin” and at most, become a symbol of community and togetherness. That is, as long as people give two hoots about the project.
